Fra Sortlands bygdebok[1]; "Johan og Lovisa blei på mange måter overhoder i den store gruppa av familier som oppsto da sønnene og døtrene til Peder Johansen og Ingeborg Olsdatter gifta seg. Det er flere eksempler der de sørga for at naboene klarte seg gjennom vanskelige perioder. En av årsakene til denne innsatsen var nok at Johan og Lovisa hadde den tryggeste økonomien, til tross for at de satt med langt mindre jord enn de to Smedrabbenpartene. Paret bygde opp et tun på Fagerlirøa og brukte jorda på Skiftebakken derfra. Antakelig satsa Johan mindre på fisket en brødrene gjorde. Inntekta hans svingte fra år til år, og nådde aldri de store toppene. Derimot bygde han og Lovisa opp en stor formue og gården utgjorde mesteparten av den. De hadde derfor midler å bidre mad når nedgangstider satte andre på bar bakke. Sjøl tok de aldri opp et lån, men betalte kontant det de trengte. De fleste gårdsbrukene i nabolaget blei delt ytterligere på 1900-tallet, det skjedde ikke med eiendommen til Johan og Lovisa. De solgte gården udelt til en av sønnene i 1923, men unntok fra salget "den søre stue med kjøkken og loft rett ovenpå". Året etter døde Lovisa. Johan nærma seg nitti da han døde i 1937." (Johan I.
